Railway Museum
Valladolid has had a long history of ties to the railway: in 1861 the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España decided to locate its General Workshops in our city, the oldest ones in Spain, which have continued to perform the same function ever since, although they have recently changed location. This industry generated a large amount of employment, both direct and indirect. In addition, the existence of an Apprentice School linked to the railway, which trained very good professionals, led to the establishment of other important industries.
This means that Valladolid has a historical debt with the railway, which could be settled with the creation of a railway museum in the city, which ASVAFER has been claiming for many years. In addition to the above, Valladolid has an ideal location for such a museum: the Locomotive Depot. On the other hand, very close to it is the famous Brick Arch, which could be a good symbol for that museum.
An interesting idea could be to expand the railway museum into a more general transport museum, to link it with other means of transport related to Valladolid, such as the Canal de Castilla or the automobile.
For this reason, ASVAFER has been recovering various types of railway material, both static and rolling, so that the memory of the railway in Valladolid is not lost.
For now, although our headquarters is already a museum itself, we have rooms dedicated specifically to it where you can appreciate:
- The reconstruction of the station master's office from some thirty years ago, with its teletype, typewriter, pennant, whistle, etc.
- Track machinery.
- Jacks and tools of different types.
- Lanterns.
- Interlocks.
- Forging tools.
- Measuring instruments.
- Signs of different types.
- Communication systems.
- Uniforms.
- Railway vehicle plates.
- etc.
